The word Apologetics comes from the greek word apologia which means "to give an answer." But before we get into talking about how to answer the questions of the unbeliever, we have to look at the person defending the faith.
We as Christians MUST NOT divorce the content of apologetics from the apologist. If we as Christians and defenders of the faith would live lives that in no way resemble Christ, no person seeking answers to Christianity would take us serious. It doesn't matter how amazing your words are, how perfect your answer is, because if your life isn't different because you follow Jesus, nobody will take what you have to say seriously.
A famous british evangelist once said there are 5 gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and the Christian, but most people won't read the first 4. Now obviously there's a little bit of an exaggeration here as Christians aren't actually a gospel but we are called with our lives to represent Christ. If we don't do that well, there's a level that people won't take you and what you have to say seriously.
Now there's a completely different level that even if your life perfectly reflects Christ and you have the perfect answer to every question, there's still a chance that the person you are talking to will reject Christ because at the end of the day we must remember that people's rejection of God isn't a rational issue but a heart issue. With only one who can fix the heart issue.
Now that doesn't negate the importance of the rational, but it should remind us that we are called to represent Christ well so that when called upon to be used, we may be prepared. But at the same time fully aware that someone's salvation isn't in your control but rather the one who soften hearts.
My question to you today is how can people look at your life and see that you are a follower of Jesus? BOTH publicly and privately.
